Ossian Agro’s mobile apps A farmer friendly

Don’t be surprised by the casual demeanour of the farmers in Anand’s Sojitra, a village cluster, about 30 km east of Ahmedabad. They drive around in sedans, live in two-storeyed bungalows, chat on their mobiles, go shopping with their families to the Big Bazaar stores in Ahmedabad or Vadodara and use plastic money at the counters.

Wish them ‘how are you’ and pat comes a very positive reply— ‘maja maa’ (I am having fun). This afternoon, the excitement in the village is palpable. The farmers are all assembled at the home of one Bhavesh Patel, who just made a call from his Nokia E-75, but said nothing and hung up. “Will it come?” asks one of the villagers. We are told they are waiting for water to flow into their fields from a reservoir 10 km away. Patel has activated the pump set at the site by making the call. Now, the wait has begun.

The villagers have a new deity to worship. They call it Nano Ganesh (or small Ganesh in Gujarati). The inventor of this mobile-phone enabled gadget however named it Ganesh first and them prefixed it with ‘Nano’ after Tata Motors decided to relocate its Nano factory from Singur to Sanand, near Ahmedabad. “I thought that the farmers in Gujarat, where the product has already generated considerable demand, will like the name, and it has worked,” says Santosh Ostwal, the Pune-based founder of Ossian Agro Automation which developed the gadget that’s revolutionising irigation in farms across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Around 7,000 farmers are already using Nano Ganesh. Ostwal hopes his impending north India launch will take the number to one lakh in two years.

Thanks to low tariffs and handset prices, the cellphone is well penetrated in rural India. And Ostwal is taking advantage of this. Among many of the USPs of the device are its price tag at Rs 600-2,500 apiece, and ease of use. If one is using a mobile phone already, the cost will be even lower. The pumpset is conected to the device, and activated from a distance by making a call from another handset (or even a public phone) from anywhere in the world.

The idea has its roots in Ostwal’s childhood when he spent time with his grandfather, a farmer who grew oranges. His village didn’t have a television set; even electricity was a luxury. The senior Ostwal had to walk deep into his orchard late at night, with a stick and a flickering oil lamp to water the trees.

“He developed infections on his feet and had to lose one of his legs. It set me thinking whether I could do something for farmers so that they wouldn’t have to walk into the fields to water the saplings or plants,” Ostwal says. A good education helped him become an engineer and got him a job at Telco—the same firm which today makes the Nano car. He quit in the mid-eighties, and started working on his idea. 10 years later he developed a remote controlled device. By then, India was ready with software and mobile phones. Bharat was waiting.

The wait ended in Sojitra. Water flowed into the fields and farmers hugged each other. They also congratulated Ostwal who was standing by. What’s next? Ostwal says he is now working on new ideas. The mobile modem which he developed to control the pump set can be used in other useful applications too, such as alerting users when their water tanks overflow, or in case of a fire or break-in at homes.

Ostwal’s simple application is already winning him accolades the world over. Mobile handset major Nokia recognised his work at the All Innovators contest in Barcelona last year with a cash prize of $25,000 and promised to distribute his mobile application to consumers worldwide. Tata Teleservices has recently joined hands with Ostwal to market products based on his invention, across the country. What’s more, leading investors have approached him with offers for funding. Ostwal says he expects to do a business of over Rs 20 crore by 2010, up from Rs 1 crore this year.

Nano Ganesh is a GSM Mobile based remote control system exclusively for the use with water
pump sets in agriculture areas. The need of Nano Ganesh arised from the routine problems
faced by the farmers in operating the pumps. They are, fluctuations in power supply, difficult
terrain, fear of animals on the way to pumps, hazardous locations of the pumps along the river or water storage beds, shock hazards, rains etc.

Mobiles can take control over the irrigation pumpset's

Now, mobiles can take control over the pumpsets from anywhere in the world through a phone call.

The device called as 'Nano Ganesh' will be priced between Rs.560 and Rs.1700 will be commercially launched on 23rd September in Pune. The device helps a farmer to switch on/off the pumpset through a call made by a mobile or a land line phone or even a PCO phone from anywhere in the world.

Santosh Hiralal Ostwal, established a research and development center to develop the product in Pune in 1996. He developed a mobile modem, which controls the starter of the pump set. The modem along with a mobile phone, which interfaces a 440 volt system, is attached to the starter panel of the pumpset. On the deployment of the system, a pre-set code is given to the farmer to switch on/off the pumpset. In order to switch on the set a farmer has to call up the number of the mobile phone attached in the starter panel. One can confirm the availability of the power in the pumpset by a long beep sound, which will be signaled from the receiving end during the call Followed by the confirmation of availability of the power, the caller has to dial a preset code provided for the user to switch on the pump set. Once the code is dialed the user has to confirm his function by a feedback tone and then cut the call. For switching off the pumpset, the same process has to be repeated and a different preset code is entered to switch off the pumpset.

To make the phones easily accessible to the farmer community, Santosh deployed basic phones like Nokia 1100. To ease the system of deployment, the company provides the buyer with a CD, an instruction manual and a wiring diagram along with the product explaining in a step by step way to fit and use 'Nano Ganesh'. The modem is also available with a theft proof inbuilt device called 'Nano Ganesh Hanuman', whereby its installation will also ensure alert in case of theft attempt near the pump area related to pumpset cable, panel or pump itself.

"Our next targeted states will be Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh," says Santosh. Currently, he has covered the outskirts of Maharastra, and already around 300 units of the device in the trial phase are sold till date.

Commenting on the product, Prakash Sayini, Business Development Manager, Nokia Forum says, "The level of innovation possible through mobile is seen in this product."

Farmers to operate irrigation pumps by cell - Nano Ganesh

Telecom service provider, Tata Teleservices(TTSL), has launched a new product offering, especially for the rural community. Under a project named as Nano Ganesh, TTSL will be offering services that allows the farmers to operate their irrigation pumps from remote location without having to travel tens of kms to and fro daily. The telecom service provider has tied up with Ossian Agro Automation to offer remote device access to regulate the irrigation systems.

According to Naveen Bhasin, chief operating officer, Gujarat, Tata Teleservices Limited, "Tata Indicom is first operator in India to partner with Ossian Agro to offer remote access to irrigation pumps using a mobile phone Nano Ganesh — a radical move to save electricity, time, money and resources like water. We have launched a pilot project as part of the inauguration at Sojitra in Anand district of Gujarat."

Under the service, farmers will have to buy Tata Indicom mobile connection and a mobile modem that will be attached to the starter of the pump set. After registration, the subscriber (farmer) will be provided with a unique code number. Using the mobile handset, the farmer can remotely switch on and switch off the pump set with the assigned code number. The farmer can also check the on/off status as well as the availability of power by a particular tone.

"This service is exceptionally functional in order to save lot of time and energy in the regions that have erratic power supply," added Bhasin.

The subscriber shall be charged Rs 2,700 for the device and additional for the handset that offers lifetime validity. The service comprises two handsets that shall be provided with the bundled offer — one installed with the device and the other remains with the farmer. All calls made to the pump by the Tata Indicom mobile shall be free whereas the other calls charged as per the tariff plan given to the subscriber.

Talking further about the launch, Bhasin said, "We are extremely delighted to partner with Ossian Agro Automation for launching Nano Ganesh. With Tata Indicom network support, the farmers can remotely access their irrigation pumps which will help them improve productivity, and save electricity costs and have better return on investment. Through our various rural initiatives like Sahayak, MKrishi, and Nano Ganesh amongst others, Tata Indicom is constantly innovating and devising new techniques to reach out to the basic needs of rural India."
